TheLastLaugh staff learned long ago that any conversation starting with the words, ‘You people” did not forebode well. Especially if those words come from The Scottish Geisha.

“You people,” she announced as she hung up the phone, “are beyond useless.”

Nevertheless she was smiling and in good humor.

“That has never been in question,” commented the MVP. “What’s up?”

“That was Deep Fin,” The Scottish Geisha said, obviously relishing her ‘insider’ status.
“He says an announcement concerning Surly’s resigning will be issued today.”

Within hours it was but well after The Scottish Geisha had the actual release in hand.

“Excellent timing,” she noted. “Right before Labor Day weekend and with training camp starting next week.”

MVP leaned over her shoulder to scan the news. “He’s only 24,” she said, surprised.

The Scottish Geisha nodded gravely. “I know, so young, so innocent, but isn’t this wonderful news? Now we don’t have to worry all weekend.”

Some of us were loathe to point out that we hadn’t planned on scheduling any worry time over the three-day weekend. Especially not about Surly, aka, Scott Hannan, Defenseman Number 22 for the Sharks. Especially not about somebody who can so easily get four lovely young women to be his collective date for the evening.

Not that we are bitter or anything.

“You people need to move on from this,” The Scottish Geisha said, clearly too pleased to turn the proverbial knife for once.

“I wonder if that slugger Scot Parker is going to try and upstage Surly,” MVP mused.

“Don’t be silly,” admonished The Scottish Geisha. Parker is the Shark’s new muscle but Surly is the heartbeat of the team. He’s far more sensitive and artistic. After all, he’s Surly.”

MVP considered this over a pregnant silence.

“Twenty bucks says Parker gets the penalty box before Surly does,” MVP challenged.

The Scottish Geisha laughed out loud. “Pre-season or regular?” she asked.
