In spite of the on-going
politics at the Academy Awards, and the Oscar's continued refusal to award
repeated excellence (think Steven Spielberg), Return Of The King and the
entire LOTR crew got their due and more at this year's Oscars…. |

| While most movie buffs and die hard Ringers expected Peter Jackson's third installment of The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, Return Of The King, to fare well at this year's Oscars, nobody was more surprised at the clean sweep (tying Titanic for the record) that the LOTR team accomplished. As the evening progressed, the collective looks on the faces of the LOTR team went from grateful joy to outright shock. Could this unabashed adoration continue right up until the end? It not only could but did. ROTR swept the boards, taking home awards for all 11 categories the movie was nominated for. This tribute amounted to a night long standing ovation from the politically stagnant and snooty Academy that had never recognized the accomplishments of any fantasy film prior to Jackson taking on Tolkien's literary masterpiece. What a refreshing change of pace. The only potential downer of the evening was the previously acknowledged lack of individual recognition for some of the finest performances, both leading and supporting, that movie goers have seen in quiet some time. So, we salute the LOTR team (and Andy Sirkis and Sean Astin in particular) for the outstanding accomplishment that took more than 25,000 people and nearly 8 years of unfailing cinematic effort and unsurpassed talent and dedication. In the end, it was the very least that the Academy could do. Best Picture Copyright© 2003. All rights reserved.
