| In times of great cynicism and doubt, in a world when 60 year olds pay money to look 30 and world leaders have lost even a nodding acquaintance with the truth, there remains one thing the World can count on. And that one thing is Baghdad Bob. Baghdad Bob was the Iraqi Minister of Information. He was the one, missiles literally crashing down around him, would declare to the world press: "There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!" God, they just don’t make ‘um like Baghdad Bob anymore. Baghdad Bob stood out, so far above and beyond the norm. He could and often did, run circles around the average pr hack from Hollywood or some politician’s gofer. Baghdad Bob could weave a story so profound, so spellbinding, that his words, to this day, amount to nothing less than riveting: "The authority of the civil defense ... issued a warning to the civilian population not to pick up any of those pencils because they are booby traps," he said, adding that the British and American forces were "immoral mercenaries" and "war criminals" for such behavior. "I am not talking about the American people and the British people," he said. "I am talking about those mercenaries. ... They have started throwing those pencils, but they are not pencils, they are booby traps to kill the children." In the world of PR, public relations, Baghdad Bob remains a legend; an unattainable Mount Everest for PR pukes worldwide. "God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis." See what we mean? We are saddened, as all pr professionals should be, by the sheer lack of accolades for Baghdad Bob. Knowing he has been deprived of recognition for his stunning achievements is one of the greatest crimes of the 21st century. Above all else, Baghdad Bob sought to elevate the facts, the truth, if you will to a higher plane. Even so, once in awhile, his genius would be grounded enough for us all to understand: "Bush is a very stupid man. The American people are not stupid, they are very clever. I can't understand how such clever people came to elect such a stupid president." Uh, come to think of it….neither can we…. Copyright© 2003. All rights reserved.
