The Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of the public school systems in all 50 states, rates each states' schools. States are 'graded' on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. Facorts include such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios, etc.. In addition, states receive negative points for high drop-out rates and physical violence.
The rankings are below but before we get to that, the fifth biggest economy in the world, California, happens to rank, well, uh 44th.
Is anybody surprised? Practically in the lower 10 percentile, California, with its vast economic resources ranks among the dumbest states in the country.
The fact that they are holding 'an historic recall this week, with groping actors, whacked out politicians and assorted losers all running for governor simply isn't helping the state's already poor image. What California needs is a serious face lift, a make over and a big-time attitude adjustment.
Oh, and some attention to the long-neglected educational system wouldn't hurt either.
